What to Expect at Your First Visit to Front Royal Dental Group
If it's been a while since you've seen a dentist — or if you've never visited us before — I want you to know something right away: we're genuinely glad you're here. Whatever brought you to Front Royal Dental Group, you're welcome. No questions about how long it's been. No lectures. Just a friendly team ready to take good care of you.
First visits can feel a little uncertain, and that's completely normal. So let me walk you through what happens when you come in, so you know exactly what to expect.
Before You Even Sit in the Chair
When you arrive, you'll be greeted by our front desk team. We try to make the check-in process as easy as possible. If you've already filled out your health history forms online, great — if not, we'll give you a few minutes to complete them when you arrive.
Your health history matters to us because we want to understand the whole picture: any medications you're on, conditions you're managing, anything that might affect your dental care. This isn't about paperwork for the sake of it. It helps us tailor your visit to you specifically.
If you're feeling nervous, please just let us know. You can tell the front desk, you can tell the assistant, you can tell me directly. Many people feel that way, and we will work with you at whatever pace feels comfortable. You're in control here — always.
Your New Patient Exam: What We're Looking At
Once you're settled in, we'll start with a full new patient exam. This typically includes digital X-rays, a clinical exam of your teeth and gums, and an oral cancer screening.
Digital X-rays let us see what's happening below the surface — things that aren't visible to the naked eye, like early decay between teeth or bone changes around the roots. Modern digital X-rays use a fraction of the radiation of older film X-rays, which is something many patients appreciate.
The clinical exam is where I get to meet you properly. I'll check each tooth individually, look at your gums, and assess your bite. I'll also check your jaw joints and the soft tissues in your mouth. If anything stands out, I'll explain it in plain language — no jargon, no guessing on your part.
Oral cancer screening is part of every new patient exam here. It takes just a few minutes and is something we consider a standard part of caring for you.
Meeting With Our Hygiene Team
For most new patients, your exam appointment will also include a professional cleaning with one of our hygienists. They're thorough, gentle, and happy to explain what they're doing as they go.
During the cleaning, your hygienist will remove built-up plaque and tartar, polish your teeth, and review your home care routine with you. This isn't about pointing out what you're doing wrong — it's about giving you tools that actually work for your life.
If we find that you may benefit from a deeper level of cleaning, we'll talk through that with you honestly and let you decide how you'd like to proceed.
Going Over Your Treatment Plan Together
After the exam and cleaning, I'll sit down with you and go over what I found. I'll show you your X-rays, walk you through anything that needs attention, and explain your options clearly.
My goal is always for you to truly understand what's going on — not to overwhelm you, but to make sure you feel informed. If you want more detail on something, just ask. If you want the short version first, that works too.
We'll talk about what's a priority and what can wait. We'll talk about timing and what investment looks like for different options. Nothing gets scheduled without your understanding and your agreement.
If you're curious about things beyond your basic dental health — like cosmetic dentistry options, or whether clear aligners might be a fit for you — this is a good time to bring that up. There's no pressure either way. We just want you to know what's possible.
A Few Practical Things to Know
How long should I plan for? A new patient appointment typically runs about 60 to 90 minutes. Treatment timelines vary based on what we find, but we'll give you a clear picture before you leave.
What should I bring? Your insurance card if you have one, a list of any medications you take, and any dental records if you have them — though we can also request those for you if needed.
Do I need to do anything special to prepare? Just come as you are. Brush and floss before you arrive if you're able to, but honestly, we're here to help no matter what.
FAQ
What if I haven't been to the dentist in a long time? You're not alone, and we genuinely mean that. Life gets busy, circumstances change, and dental care can fall off the list. We're not here to make you feel bad about that. We'll start where you are and take it step by step together.
Will my first visit hurt? Most new patient exams are very comfortable. If anything during the exam causes discomfort, just let us know and we'll adjust. We're comfort-focused in everything we do, and you can ask us to pause at any time.
What if I need a lot of dental work? If we find that you need significant care, we'll talk through it calmly and help you prioritize. You won't be handed a long list and sent on your way. We'll make a plan together — one that works for you.
Do you offer emergency dental care for new patients? Yes. If you're in pain or dealing with an urgent dental issue, call us and we'll do our best to get you in as quickly as possible. You don't need to be an existing patient to reach out for help.
We're looking forward to meeting you. If you have questions before your first visit, please don't hesitate to reach out — we're here to help.
