The question people actually ask

Most people ask how white their teeth will get. A minute later the real question arrives: is it going to hurt?

It is the fair question, and it is the reason most people who want whiter teeth never book. So it is worth answering properly, before anything else.

Why whitening can sting — and what controls it

Whitening works below the surface, not on it. The peroxide gel breaks down into oxygen. That oxygen passes through enamel into the dentin underneath, where it breaks apart the larger colored molecules that make a tooth look dark.

The dentin is also where sensitivity comes from. It is threaded with microscopic tubules running toward the nerve. When peroxide reaches them, the nerve reacts.

Two things decide how much: how long the gel sits on the tooth, and whether the tooth dries out while it works. Both are controllable — and the system we use is built around controlling them.

The seal

A tooth that dries out during treatment is a tooth that gets sensitive. The sealed mouthpiece keeps the reaction, and the moisture, where they belong.

The warmth

Gentle warmth speeds the reaction up, so each pass runs about eight minutes rather than one long sitting. Less time on the tooth is less time for sensitivity to build.

The gel

Potassium nitrate, a desensitiser, is mixed into the formula rather than painted on afterward. It is working the whole time, not at the end.

What to know before you book

Whitening lifts color from natural tooth structure only: Crowns, veneers, bonding and fillings keep the color they were made in. If any sit in your smile line, we plan the shade around them rather than discovering the mismatch afterward.
The result settles over a day or two: Teeth look their brightest immediately afterward, then rehydrate. Day three is the real result.
It is not permanent: Coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco re-stain over time. How fast depends on your habits, and we will tell you honestly what to expect from yours.
A cleaning first matters: Whitening acts on tooth structure, not on plaque or tartar sitting on top of it.
Some discoloration does not respond: Staining that came from inside a tooth — an old injury, a tooth that has had a root canal, tetracycline, fluorosis — behaves differently and may need a different treatment. We will say so if that is what we see.
