Does Front Royal Dental Group Take Medicaid?

Yes. We accept Virginia Medicaid dental coverage, and we have for some time.

I am writing this because of a conversation I have had more times than I can count. A patient sits down and we talk about what their teeth need. Somewhere in the middle they say something like: "I have Medicaid, so I assume none of this is covered."

Often they have been putting off care for years on that assumption. For most of them, the assumption is out of date.

What most people get wrong about Virginia Medicaid and teeth

Here is the part that surprises people. Until 2021, adults on Virginia Medicaid really did have almost no dental benefit. If you were over 21, the program covered emergency extractions and very little else. A painful tooth could be pulled. A tooth that could still be saved usually was not.

That changed on July 1, 2021. Virginia added a comprehensive adult dental benefit to Medicaid. Adults gained coverage for the same categories children already had: exams, cleanings, x-rays, fillings, extractions, root canals, crowns, gum treatment, and dentures.

The change was real, and it was large. What did not change nearly as fast was what people believed. Word of mouth about "Medicaid does not cover dental" had years of momentum behind it, and it is still repeated in waiting rooms and family conversations today.

If you decided years ago that dental care was out of reach, that decision was probably correct when you made it. It may not be correct now.

How the coverage actually reaches your dentist

Virginia does not administer the dental benefit directly. It contracts the work out, and understanding that structure explains a few things that otherwise seem strange.

The dental program is called Smiles For Children, and it is administered by DentaQuest on behalf of the Virginia Department of Medical Assistance Services. So your medical coverage might come through one health plan, while your dental coverage runs through DentaQuest regardless.

This is why two things happen so often:

  • Your dental card and your medical card may look different, or you may not have received a separate dental card at all.
  • A practice can be in network for your medical plan and still handle dental through a different arrangement.

It is also why the question "do you take my insurance" is harder to answer over the phone than most people expect. We are usually not checking one thing. We are checking your eligibility, your plan, and what your specific benefit covers on the date you come in.

What happens when people wait

I want to be plain about this part, because it is the reason the article exists.

Tooth decay does not pause while you wait for a better financial moment. It moves in one direction. A small area of decay in enamel is a filling. Given enough time, that same decay reaches the pulp, which is the living tissue inside the tooth that holds the nerve and blood supply. Once bacteria reach the pulp, a filling is no longer an option. The choice becomes a root canal or an extraction.

The cost of waiting is rarely the cost you expect. It is usually the difference between a twenty minute appointment and a much longer one, and sometimes the difference between keeping a tooth and losing it.

The other pattern I see is the emergency room visit. Hospitals can help with pain and infection, and they should be your first call if swelling is spreading toward your throat or affecting your breathing. But most hospitals have no dentist on staff. They can treat the symptom. They cannot treat the tooth. People go home with a prescription and the same problem they arrived with.

What to do before your first visit

Three things make the appointment go smoothly.

Bring your Medicaid card and a photo ID. If you have a separate DentaQuest card, bring that too. If you have never seen one, that is common and not a problem.

Call us before you book. Our number is (540) 636-2003. We verify your eligibility and your specific benefit before you sit in the chair, so that nothing about the cost is a surprise on the day. Coverage varies by plan and by date, and the only honest answer to "is this covered" comes after we check.

Tell us what is actually bothering you. If something hurts, say so when you call rather than waiting for the exam. It changes how we schedule you.

For a new patient we usually start with an exam and x-rays. The x-rays matter more than people expect, because a large share of decay begins between teeth where no one can see it, including us. That first visit is where we find out what is really going on, and it is also where you find out what your plan covers before you agree to anything.

You can read more about how we handle coverage and payment on our insurance and financing page, or see what a first appointment involves on our new patients page.

One honest caveat

Coverage rules change, plans differ, and eligibility can lapse without much warning. Nothing in this article replaces checking your own plan. What I can tell you is that we accept Virginia Medicaid, we verify benefits before treatment, and we will tell you what something costs before we do it.

If you have been putting off dental care because you assumed it was not covered, the fastest way to find out is a phone call.
